Morang attorney records CK Raut’s statement

MORANG, SEP 17 – Police on Tuesday started recording statement of Chandra Kant Raut, who was arrested three days ago on the charge of being involved in a secessionist campaign.

Raut has been booked under the Public Offence Act. The Morang District Administration Office on Sunday remanded Raut to a six-day custody to probe his campaign for “independent Madhes”. His statement was recorded at the District Attorney Office for three hours.

Shankar Khatri, district attorney, said recording statement has been completed and police would file at case against him at the District Administration Office through the attorney’s office. Khatri declined to give details of the statement saying that it is under police investigation.

Deputy Superintendent of Police Prabhu Prasad Dhakal said the case would be filed against him once the investigation is complete. However, Dhakal said he was unaware of the Supreme Court order for Nepal Police to present Raut in person before the court by Friday. He said police has not received any letter from the Court.

Protests were organised in some Tarai districts to press for Raut’s release on Tuesday. A group of engineering students took out a rally in Biratnagar.

Sadbhawan Party (Gajendra) in Rajbiraj organised a press meet demanding Raut’s immediate release. Party Chairperson Bikash Tiwari said the arrest of Raut was the government’s attempt to deflect the Madhesi agendas of federalism, proportional representation and one Madhes province.
