BIRATNAGAR, Sept 14: Morang District Police has started investigation against activist CK Raut, who was detained from Rangeli on Saturday.
The chief district officer of Morang, Ganesh Raj Karki, informed that Raut has been remanded to police custody for six days. Police sources said Raut was detained on the charge of his involvement in anti-nationalist movement in the Tarai.
However, the District Police Office has not said anything about the arrest so far. He has not been allowed to meet anyone in police custody.
Deputy superintendent at the District Police Office, Morang, Prabhu Dhakal, informed that Raut is being investigated. “The investigation is under way against Raut and he has been charged with public offence,” Dhakal added.
During a meeting held at the Constituent Assembly´s Political Dialogue Consensus Committee in Kathmandu last month, Raut, as an expert on Madhes, had said that Madhes should secede from the country and declare itself independent if suppression of Madhes continued.
Raut has authored a book entitled ´Madhesko Itihaas´ and made dozens of related documentaries.
HR activists demand immediate release
Meanwhile, issuing a press statement in Kathmandu on Sunday, a group of human rights activists led by Padmaratna Tuladhar demanded immediate release of CK Raut. They have termed his arrest as ´extrajudicial´.
“Anyone has right to freedom of speech as prescribed by the Interim Constitution. He/she can express views in an assembly and form organization without any obstacles. Raut´s arrest is in breach of the interim constitution,” reads the statement.
The human rights activists have also vented ire against the police for not making public the reason behind Raut´s detention.
