KATHMANDU, OCT 08 – A case of treason has been filed at the Special Court against CK Raut, a Madhesi campaigner who stands accused of being involved in a secessionist campaign, on Wednesday.
The Morang District Attorney Office filed the case arguing that Raut advocated a separate national anthem and flag meant for a separate Madhesh nation in the coming days.
The DAO has demanded maximum 20-years of imprisonment against Raut. “We received the case and his interrogation will start Thursday onwards,” said Special Court Registrar Natibabu Lamichhane.
Raut, who is currently under police custody, has refused to record his statement citing poor health. “The verdict will be issued as per his interrogation before the court,” said Lamichhane.
Raut was arrested by Morang police on September 13 and was booked under the Public Offence Act. The Morang District Administration Office had then remanded Raut to six-day custody to probe his campaign for “independent Madhes”. The Supreme Court later asked police to present Raut before court.
Raut, who had been staging fast-unto-death since September 20, had ended his hunger strike on the 11th day on October 1.
