CK Raut freed on bail

KATHMANDU, NOV 24 – CK Raut, a Madhesi campaigner who was arrested on charge of being involved in a secessionist campaign, has been freed on Monday after posting a bail amount of Rs. 50,000.

Raut was arrested by Morang police on September 13 and was booked under the Public Offence Act. The Morang District Administration Office had then remanded Raut to six-day custody to probe his campaign for “independent Madhes”. The Supreme Court later asked police to present Raut before court.

The Special Court had later asked to free Raut on bail. Raut, however, did not post bail until today and had been kept at Dillibazaar-based prison. He has been freed today after his supporters collected the necessary sum for bail.

Raut had also staged a hunger strike while on custody. He was later taken to the Maharajgunj-based Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital for medical attention.

He then ended his hunger strike upon government’s request and commitment to respect freedom of expression.
