LAHAN, JAN 19 – Lahan became tense on Monday after police intervened and foiled a planned programme to mark the eighth Balidan Diwas organsied by Alliance for Independent Madhes (AIM) in Lahan of Siraha district on Monday.
Madhesi activist CK Raut, who was accused of sedition charges, was scheduled to address the programme.
The AIM had called for the programme at Lahan-based Pasupati Adarsha Higher Secondary School today.
The situation became tense after police evicted the people converged at the school premises. The agitated mob retaliated by pelting stones at security personnel who fired four rounds of tear-gas shells to contain the situation.
The AIM cadres have resorted to street demonstrations against what they call the ‘police barbarity’ by burning tyres on the main road of Lahan market. The shops around the school area are closed after the situation took a bad turn.
Security personnel from Nepal Police and Armed Police Force have occupied the school compound, while the protesters are obstructing the main road by chanting slogans in front of the school.
Earlier in September, Raut was arrested on the charge of sedition, and later released in November, after he deposited a bail of Rs 50,000.
