Secessionism will prevail if no Madhes state: Thakur

JITENDRA KHADKA RAJBIRAJ, FEB 20 – The Tarai Madhes Loktantrik Party (TMLP ) Chairman Mahanta Thakur has said that secessionism would prevail in the nation if the new constitution could not address the issue of Madhes.

Thakur said so during a programme organised by Saptari district chapter of TMLPin Rajbiraj on Friday.

“Currently, there are two major political lines in Madhes region,” said Thakur at the press meet, “One of them is demanding for a separate Madhes nation and another one seeking Madhes province in this nation. But there is a growing danger that secessionism, as demanded by CK Raut, would prevail in the country.”

Saying that voices for separate Madhes had been raised since 2017 BS, Chairman Thakur said though the voice was not strong, it would intensify if Madhes province was not formed during federalism.

“Our key demand is the promulgation of a new constitution with federalism and no hill district should be inducted in Madhes province,” said Thakur. “This is not our new demand. It has been mentioned in the agreement signed by late Nepali Congress leader Girija Prasad Koirala, UML leader Madhav Kumar Nepal and UCPN (Maoist) Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal.”

He added that the interim constitution states that the Madhes region will be autonomous province.

Thakur underscored the need to implement the past pacts and draft the new constitution through consensus. He said the nation would have to deal with a grave crisis in case of failure to draft the new constitution. “It is not good to demonstrate arrogance of majority seats in the Constituent Assembly,” said Thakur, “The majority game can only be implemented for forming and dissolving the government but not for writing the constitution.”

He warned that it would not be a wise move to disregard the sea of people during the last Madhes movement and the demands raised by them.
